REVITALISATION OF LAKES IN TUDA REGION
 |
| Tirupati is a vibrant pilgrim town located in Chittoor District of Andhra Pradesh dramatically sited at the foot of a bluff of red sand stone that marks the Tirumala hills.
The land scape of Tirupati and its surroundings are punctuated by a number of lakes and water bodies.
Historically, the lakes and inlet channels formed part of the natural drainage and source of water supply to the human habitations.
However, human interventions over the last three decades have compromised all the lakes natural and man made systems in the following ways. |
- The inlet channels have been encroached upon, diverted from their original course, and have become silted.
- Artificial developments are taking shape in the catchment areas of lakes, thereby decreasing the natural recharge of water.
- Due to the man made interventions, the ground water table is depleting and leading to desertification.
|
- To identify the potential tanks in TUDA region and to take up revitalization programs
- Removing the encroachments in the tanks and also within the inlet channels so as to ensure free flow of storm water from the catchment areas.
- Construction of compound walls and desiltaion programs to increase the water holding capacity in the selected tanks, thereby increasing the recharge of ground water.

As a part of structure plan exercise the TUDA has conducted a detailed land use
survey to assess the environmental issues, the geographical spread of various land
uses and the resultant problems associated with the land uses.
